Augmented reality in Education.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Fred R. Barnard

Instead of reading theory how about something, where students can see it with their own eyes and in action. Bringing augmented reality to use in the educational field to bring out an immersive user experience. Augmented reality in education can be used in numerous ways. It can help students easily grasp the process and will help them to remember information due the method of teaching. As this is a very interactive method with 3D visualization and diagrams that come to life, it will always help students remember this information more than what they would have learnt in lectures, through the use of books and worksheets. Additionally, AR makes learning more engaging and fun.

Education is a vast process and can be studied by any age group which gives all the more reason for this adoption, due to its limitless usage. AR features can be used equally well in all levels of schooling; from pre- school education up to college and even at work and any level possible. Augmented reality has the power to replace textbooks, physical models, posters, printed manuals because it offers portable and creative learning materials. This makes education more accessible and mobile as this powerful tool, AR will motivate and engage students.

Children in the iGeneration are considered to be the most technological-infused demographic up to date and use technology, smartphones, tablets and computers naturally. They haven’t known life without the internet or video games which makes augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality (AR/VR/MR), robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) taking over the and changing the education industries. There is no doubt that augmented reality is here to stay and take over all the industries, including education and training. With the help of this latest technology, educational institutions can create a completely different learning experience opportunity for children, regardless of their age group or level of education. Education with augmented reality will contribute to a better preparation for the leaders of the future, helping students to excel in their activities and with great ease.

Unlike VR, augmented reality won’t adopt any expensive hardware and since 73% of all teens currently own a smartphone, AR technologies are immediately available for use for the majority of the target audience. AR apps have a vast opportunity to diversify and lighten up a boring class. Interactive lessons, where all students get involved in the learning process at the same time, help improve teamwork skills.

AR in education will help students achieve better results through visualization and full immersion in the subject matter giving a clear picture to students of what they are studying with 3D- rotatable images with zoom-in and zoom-out features. The teacher can explain the subject better and will be able to provide a visual representation of the material and can also help students test out their knowledge in practice, in all possible subjects. With the aid of augmented reality, students will be able to learn the same thing even outside classroom. This gives students a better opportunity as online learning can be easier than distance learning and more efficient with AR-aided educational materials.

It is quite evident that augmented reality in education has enormous potential and variation in uses are yet to be discovered. With the current adoption of mobile technologies and the recent advances in hardware, AR is becoming more accessible and is broadly used by a variety of industries. Therefore, right now seems like a good time to make the initiatives in this direction. Technologies like augmented reality enrich the standard methods of imparting education and demand is growing for such tech, now more than ever. These new methods of teaching enable post-session content accessibility, contextual relevancy, personal attention, up to date coursework. This brings us to the most disliked feature of using the traditional instructor-led classroom as this method is unable to address individual learner needs which eventually fails to gain attention and interest among students. But in case of AR based education, students can enjoy individual attention and enhance learning experience through these visualizations. AR, VR, MR are technologies in which visuals are evident to help learners and which will help in the   enrichment of learning experiences and will also assist the educators in creating content that links visuals to reality, being the key object of augmented reality.
